How to Check the Best Viewing Distance from your TV

When choosing the best TV screen size, you should also know how far you will be sitting from the television, and what kind of movies you will be watching to match your preferences. Today, we will see what are the best viewing distance from your TV, so you’re eyes won’t strain while watching your favorite movie.

We all know the expression “bigger is better” that actually creates a reasonable guideline when you’re trying to decide on which TV screen size is the best for you. In my experience, when choosing for a LCD TV or plasma TV, you should go with the largest screen for your room. This is because people always wish they have better and bigger screen after several months.

For HDTVs, we recommend sitting anywhere from 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 times the screen diagonal.

There are two parts on equation of the TV, it’s viewing distance and picture quality.

Sitting from the right distance across your television is also important part of optimizing the viewing experience. If this is going to be your first LCD TV, you may need to re-think your set up and viewing distance. Old-school CRT TV typically had 36″ screens or lees, you didn’t want to sit too close because you’ll see those scan lines, while with current TV today, sitting too far will cause you to miss some of the high-definition details from the movie you waited for.

You may also avoid sitting too close to your television, a good indication that you’re sitting too close is that you may find yourself distracted by the screens structure, those rows and columns of pixels that looks like tiny dots.

Viewing Distance

If you’re not sure which screen size is the best for your viewing distance, you can use our chart as a guideline. You will notice that we provided a range of screen size, rather than a hard and fast number. This is because the viewing distance will really depend on your personal taste, as well as what kind of movie you often watch.

If you watch a lot of high quality video, like Blu-ray and high-definition cable or satellite, you can sit closer at the end of the range to see all the details from your television. While if you watch lower quality sources, like analog cable, we certainly recommend sitting higher end so that you’ll notice less of the image flaws.

The chart applies to all HDTV, which is usually have an 1080p resolution. The new Ultra High Definition TV is also called 4k TV have much higher resolution screens, and it has the ability to show four times the detail of a 1080p screen (which is so cool!). If you have a 4k TV, you can sit closer than a regular HDTV.

Here’s a table of proper viewing distance depending on your TV screen size.

Viewing Angle

Viewing angle is another factor to consider for the television picture quality. No matter what kind of display technology is behind it, if the TV uses LCD, plasma or OLED, it will look at it’s best when it is viewed straight on, or eye level. You’ll probably need a universal TV stand to support your TV to raise it to the correct viewing height.

Today, skinny and lightweight flat LCD TV will give you options, you can either go with a TV stand or use a TV wall mount for a TV wall mount for a wall mounting design placement. Wall mount will save you a lot of floor space and will give you a home theater feel, check out our DIY guide on TV wall mount.

Safety

You may also want to make sure that you choose a TV mount or wall mount that are made to accommodate your television weight and size. For example, an old coffee table can be used as a TV mount, but it can’t lift your 65″ TV because the weight is too much for the table to handle.

If you have small children, mounting your TV on a wall is a good way to reduce the changes of tipping it over or injury on your child, you can also add a TV safety strap to pinned your TV.

Room lighting and your TV’s picture

Lights from lamps and window can affect your televisions picture, doing the right thing can have a positive effect, this can help you prevent eye strain and provide a deeper look blacks on your TV picture. A lot of cases, this can have a negative impact, like creating a screen-glare and making your TV colors like a faded and washed out. If you’re viewing from your room, it is better to close those lamps and windows.

Using dimmers in your home theater room, you can precisely control the amount of background light for optimum viewing comfort, plus you can achieve elegant lighting effects. There are simple, inexpensive dimmers for controlling lamps. And for the greatest convenience (and the biggest “wow” factor), look for dimmers that are remote-controllable.

If you still wanted to use a little lighting in your room, you can use dimmers in your home theater where you can control the amount of light for viewing comfort. There are simple and inexpensive dimmers for controlling lamps, and it can give you a “wow factor” into your room.

Hope by now you’ve learned a lot by setting up your TV properly and making sure that you’re getting the best of it. Make sure that you viewing angle is proper and eye level is spot on to give you the best viewing distance from your TV.
